Portsmouth Historic Dockyard provides the best activities this half term for big and little adventurers. From stepping onboard historic warships to taking part in our Fighting Fit Royal Navy challenges – there’s plenty to see and do. What’s more, kids go free this half term and all activities are included as part of their ticket. 

1. Get your skates on

Where: Victory Starboard Arena

Get your skates on at the dockyard this half term with our fantastic outdoor roller disco skating rink. We will provide everything, from the skates, matted changing area, barriers, lighting and music.

2. Relive Battle of Trafalgar

Where: HMS Victory

HMS Victory is the Royal Navy's most famous warship. Best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar and the warship where Vice Admiral Lord Nelson met his death.
Hear heroic storytelling onboard with a gripping audio tour and meet Captain Hardy on Tuesday 29 May between 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm.

This is your chance to chat to a captain in the flesh. Gather round and hear his stories as you discover what life was like for the officers and men during the Battle of Trafalgar. You can also take part in a mystery objects game on the lower gun deck. 

3. See HMS Warrior come alive

Where: HMS Warrior

Step back in time on HMS Warrior where actors will bring the ship alive with fun naval-inspired activities. Look out for the ship's surgeon’s medical checks in the Copper Kettle Café on the gun deck every morning between 10.30am - 11.30am. 

Explore the ship and enjoy a whole host of fit-tastic challenges throughout each day:

  • Test your strength by weighing gunpowder bags
  • Discover how many calories you need to consume daily as sailor
  • Find out how many men are required to fire a cannon
  • Focus your eyesight – would you make a good lookout?

You could also become the envy of your crew and make your very own cutlass sword on Wednesday 30 May between 11am - 3pm.


4. Take a Harbour Tour

Where: Boathouse 4 Jetty

The Harbour Tour offers unrivaled views of Britain’s modern ships including HMS Queen Elizabeth as well as historic buildings and the dramatic Portsmouth skyline. The tour lasts 45 minutes and you will see many of the fortifications that were built to protect Portsmouth over the centuries, in particular, the Round Tower at the harbour entrance.

5. Get closer to a submarine

Where: Royal Navy Submarine Museum - Gosport - (Access via the FREE Waterbus)

Assault all your senses by walking onboard HMS Alliance, the only remaining Second World War-era submarine, and take a journey through every decade of her service. Peek through the working periscopes, and see, hear and even smell how life was lived under the sea.

Take part in a very special exercise class has been specifically developed to entertain the under-5s whilst they learn about the unusual pets that Royal Navy ships have had over the years. Little ones will be flapping, jumping and ‘swimming’ just like our weird and wonderful animals. Friday 1 June between 1.30pm - 2.30pm.

6. Watch The Incredibles

Where: Action Stations

Join superhero family The Incredibles at Action Stations with a free screening of Disney Pixar’s classic family blockbuster. Prior to the release of the much-awaited sequel on 16th June, watch the original on the big screen in this special event. All children must be accompanied by an adult.


7. Handle fit-tastic objects

Where: Nelson Gallery

Handle tools and objects that helped the Royal Navy keep fit across the ages at our Curator’s Curiosity Corner in the Nelson Gallery between 1.30pm-2.30pm every day. Our fit-tastic historic objects include a pair of boxing gloves, a cricket bat, an Olympic discus and a trophy.


8. Discover the story of naval explosives

Where:  Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower - Gosport - (Access via the FREE Waterbus)

Discover the story of naval warfare, told in dramatic style at Explosion! This interactive museum is housed in the Royal Navy’s former Ordnance Depot at Priddy’s Hard and is centred around the powder magazine designed in 1771.

Kids can get involved in the footie-mad trail crowded with fun facts and scoring challenges. Simply request your trail sheet at reception when you arrive.

9. Become a member of the crew

Where: Starboard Arena

Get your face painted and enjoy the balloon modelling for free. Come and join in the fun!

10. Release your inner ninja

Where: Action Stations

Release your inner ninja at Action Stations and reach dizzy heights as you attempt to scale the tallest indoor climbing tower in the UK. Jump, swing, climb and balance your way through our 40 metre assault course, designed for ages 7 and up.

Little ones can enjoy Sky Tykes, a rope course designed specifically for children ranging in age from 2 - 7 years old.
